Mission Quilts is the Lutheran World Relief’s longest running program. LWR distributed its first quilts in 1945 to families in war-torn Europe following the Second World War. Within a decade, the ministry was reaching around the globe to villages far removed from the world’s attention. Today, an average of 300,000 quilts is lovingly given worldwide each year. These quilts are highly regarded throughout the world because of their quality and consistency. Careful adherence to LWR’s quilt-making guidelines ensures that every quilt is useful, consistent, and fair.
Prince of Peace has not been making quilts since 1945. No one can remember when the first quilt was made, but it was a long time ago. We do know that Prince of Peace quilters recently completed their 4,000th quilt. Individual quilters sew the quilt tops at home using donated material. Then the quilters meet twice a month to complete the quilts. Every fall, over forty boxes of quilts are added to quilts from other area churches and sent to the main distribution center in Minnesota.
In 2020 the quilters received a new tool for their arsenal when they acquired a Long-Arm Quilter. The Long-Arm Quilter holds the quilt rolled up on a spindle while an attached sewing machine sews along the length of the quilt. It is a nice addition, but does not replace all the manual work. The quilters will tell you they make quilts for the needy, but they also do it for the comradery.
It is not necessary to be a member of Prince of Peace or any other church to join the Mission Quilters. All that is required is the love of sewing and a desire to help less fortunate people around the world. All men, women, and youth are welcome. If someone has questions or wishes to join the group, please contact Jeanette Miller (249-1282) or Michelle Johnson (360-8226).
