Since the 7th century it has been a church custom to provide a yard next to the church for burying their dead. Every grave yard is a cemetery, but not every cemetery is a grave yard. With the changing of the times, more and more people are choosing cremation, but they still wish to have their ashes buried next to their church. Prince of Peace has established a Memorial Garden to meet this need. The Memorial Garden is scenic garden located behind the church. There are numerous benches next to the flower beds for those who wish to spend time with their deceased loved ones. Currently, there are thirty-five of our saints finding eternal rest in our Memorial Garden.
The cynosure of the garden is a reddish slab of stone that rests at the rear of the garden. This stone served as our altar when we were holding services in the old sanctuary. Once we moved into our larger sanctuary, we replaced the stone with a modern altar made of white oak. The stone that served us so well has been retired to the Memorial Garden.
The walking area within the Memorial Garden is covered with paving bricks, many of which are engraved with the names of those individuals who have found eternal peace in our Memorial Garden.
We are proud of the beauty found within our Memorial Garden. This does not happen by accident. We have a dedicated crew who meet most Fridays during the summer to remove weeds, plant annuals, and maintain all of the flower beds around the church.
